Because they don't work. A spam folder is a promise that you'll dig through thousands of messages looking for the one that mattered, and nobody ever does — so the real email sits there until it's too late. Your Intray is a short list of genuine unknowns instead, which is something you can actually look at.

Anything we don't recognise waits in your Intray rather than being turned away, so that's the first place to look. Open it, tap once to add that person to your trusted list, and their mail goes straight to your inbox from then on. The longer you use it, the less often you need to.

The people you trust — clients, suppliers, family, your doctor — always go straight to your inbox, whatever else the filter is doing. You manage that list yourself at any time — open My Account in the app or in webmail — and nothing from someone on it is ever filtered.

Promotional email from shops, restaurants or services you signed up with will generally still arrive — we don't block mail you asked for. If a company sends through a bulk mailing platform it may wait in your Intray instead, where one tap lets it straight through in future. Either way you're in control: add anyone to your block list and their mail stops for good.

Yes — you can have Gmail, Outlook, iCloud or any other provider forward its mail to your Magn@tar Mail address. Turn on forwarding in your account settings first, then follow the step-by-step instructions for your current provider. Forwarded mail arrives from that account rather than from the person who wrote it, which is why the setting has to be switched on before it will be delivered.

Yes, on Premium. Everyone starts with an @magnatarmail.com address because it works straight away. When you're ready to use your own, like you@yourbusiness.com, add it in My Account and we'll show you the handful of records to enter at whoever you bought the domain from.

The app checks those records for you and tells you when each one is in place, so you're not guessing. Changes usually take effect within an hour, though they can occasionally take longer. You'll need to already own the domain — we don't sell them.

Yes. Once you're signed in, My Account can copy your Inbox and Sent mail across from Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, Yahoo, Fastmail or any other provider that supports IMAP. Nothing in your old account is changed or deleted — it's a copy.

Most providers ask you to create an "app password" for this, and we'll point you to the right page for yours. A large mailbox can take a while and counts toward your storage, so it's worth bringing over what you actually need.

Any time. My Account will package your whole mailbox — one file per folder, in the standard mbox format that other mail programs can read — and give you a download link. You don't have to ask us, and you don't have to be cancelling.

If you do cancel, your mail stays readable for 30 days so you have time to take a copy before it's deleted.

Magn@tar Mail has its own app for Android and iOS — the easiest way to reach your inbox on a phone. On a computer, use our webmail at mail.magnatarmail.com, which works in any browser.

The filtering, your Intray and your trusted list are part of the app itself, so that's where you'll find them. Outlook or Apple Mail would show you a plain mailbox without any of it, which is why we don't support them.

Your email is never scanned for advertising, and we don't sell your data or share it with anyone. The business model is simple — you pay a flat monthly fee, and we keep your inbox clean. That's the whole arrangement.
